PS101 Position Paper: Does MPD Really Exist? Imagine youre having a conversation with a friend who is a slender, attractive young woman. Its a casual chat about nothing in particular between friends. You take out a pack of cigarettes and immediately sense a change, your friends body twitches slightly and her mannerism changes. Her shoulders square, she puts her feet flat on the floor and assumes an instinctively masculine pose. Placing her hands on her knees, she leans toward you, and says in a voice that has dropped two octaves, Excuse me, maam. I really favor those cigarettes you have. Mind if I have one? Id be most beholden to you. Your friend is gone and a strange man has popped in, literally. Again, you and your friend†¦show more content†¦Another common explanation for MPD is that it is mistakenly diagnosed as Schizophrenia due to a few common symptoms. Although both disorders share auditory hallucinations, Schizophrenics believe the noises are outside of their head and may hear multiple voices or noises a t the same time. MPD patients portray only one personality at a time and while each personality may be aware and have feelings about the others they do not conflict or converse with each other. In my opinion, I believe that Multiple Personality Disorder does not exist. The fact that it increased in popularity after being brought into the publics eye via media is very suspicious. In North America, the number of diagnoses exploded from only 2 reported cases per decade from 1930 to 1960, to more than 20,000 in the 1980s (McHugh). I believe that the idea of MPD goes along with Sigmund Freuds theory of repression. Repression was thought to be a defense mechanism that concealed terrible experiences and painful memories from consciousness. The theory of repression was later discredited after studies proved that high stress events enhance the memory making negative, traumatic events remembered well.
