Freud Meets World Essay -- essays research papers
Sigmund Freud, physiologist, medical doctor, psychologist, and father of psychoanalysis, is recognized as one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Freud articulated the concepts of the unconscious, of infantile sexuality, and of repression. He proposed a tripartite account of the structure of the mind, as part of a radically new therapeutic reference for the understanding of human psychological development, and the treatment of abnormal mental conditions. Freud is also known as the ââ¬Å"Father of Psychoanalysis.â⬠Psychoanalysis refers to the method of investigating unconscious mental processes, and is also a form of psychotherapy. Not regarding the multiple manifestations of psychoanalysis as it exists today, it can, in almost all respects, be traced directly back to Freudââ¬â¢s original work (Brome 12). Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856, at Freiberg in Moravia, which is now a part of Czechoslovakia. He was born into a family full of enough complexity and confusion to give him significant material for his ruminations on the individual mind and its connections with others. His mother, Amalia, an assertive, good-looking woman, was twenty years younger than her husband Jacob. Freudââ¬â¢s father was Jewish, and was said to be a wool merchant. His siblings were two half-brothers, who were already grown-up, which provided a constant reminder of the oddity of his position. His own confusions, hatreds, loves, and desires from this period appear to have had significant impact on his later work on development. The decline of the textile market, and an increase of anti-Semitism in the city, forced his family to relocate to Vienna, the capitol of Austria when he was four. While in Vienna, Freud developed a liking for the medical field, especially the nervous system, and the works of the mind. He graduated from the medical school of the University of Vienna in 1881. Freud later decided to specialize in neurology, the study Kevin Mechtley 2 and treatment of disorders of the nervous system (Brill V). He left the University, secretly engaged, and found a job at the Vienna Hospital in hopes of earning enough money to get married. While at the hospital, he concentrated on the study of cerebral anatomy and also conducted research on the possible clinical uses of cocaine. In September 1886 he married Martha Bernays after a... ...He is at once the principal writer and the principal thinker of our century. If one seeks the strongest authors in the West in our time, most readers would agree upon the crucial figures; Proust, Joyce, Kafka, Yeats, Mann, Lawrence, Eliot, Rilke, Faulkner, Valery, Stevens, Montale, Beckett certainly would be among them. The essential thinkers might constitute a shorter and more controversial canon, whether of scientists or philosophers, and I will not venture to list them here. Freud is unique in that he would dominate the second group and successfully challenge even Proust, Joyce, and Kafka in the first. Nor can one match him with any of the religious figures or scholars of the century. His only rivals indeed are Plato, Montaigne, Shakespeare, or even the anonymous primal narrator of Genesis, Exodus and Numbers, called the ââ¬Å"Jâ⬠writer of Yahwist in biblical scholarship. Sigmund Freud is generally recognized as one of the most influential and authoritative thinkers of the twentieth century. Even today, a century after Freud lived, all of his theories are debated and discussed, and some are still practiced in the psychotherapy field.

Quantitative Article Review
Research Article Critique 1 Running Head: RESEARCH ARTICLE CRITIQUE Research Article Critique of ââ¬Å"The Study of Teacher Perceptions of Instructional Technology Integration in the Classroomâ⬠by Lynette Molstad Gorder The purpose of this assignment was to review a peer reviewed journal article that is research based, and is representative of one of the research methodologies we discussed in class. The format of the article has the appearance of a dissertation because it has many of the same components. It starts with an abstract that discusses the main points of the research and the results. After reading the article, I found that the abstract failed to mention that the research was based on teachers who attended a technology course at South Dakota University. After going through a basic and advanced technology course, the teachers were sent a survey to analyze whether those teachers were integrating technology into teaching and learning. The research methodology used in this study were surveys analyzed in a quantitative design. More specifically, two survey instruments were introduced in the article, but only one was used. Both were designed by Mills and Tincher (2003). They describe the Technology Integration Standards Configuration matrix (TISC) as the first tool. This looked at technology as a tool to enhance student learning and a tool for professional productivity. The second tool described by the same designer developed the Technology Integration Matrix (TICM). This tool was more user-friendly and just described what the teacher does and what the students do in a technology outfitted classroom. Later in the article we discover that TICM is survey based on a scale rating; (1)never, (2)seldom, (3)sometimes, (4)often, and (5)always. Using this tool, the author sought to find out to what degree teachers integrate technology into their classroom and into teaching and learning after taking two technology integration classes. Using the survey the study also revealed comparisons of teacher perceptions of uses and integration based on personal characteristics. These characteristics are age, gender, number of years in the teaching field, grade level taught, content area, and education level. The research questions the study offered were 1) How do teachers currently use and integrate technology for teaching and learning in the classroom? ) How do teachers differ in the extent to which they integrate instructional technology based on the characteristics of gender, age, teaching experience, grade level taught, content area, and educational level? The characteristics are considered factors and were compared to the integration of technology in the classroom. The dependent variable in this study is the integration of technol ogy in teaching and learning in the classroom. The independent variable is the basic and advanced training course that teachers took at South Dakota University. Two courses were given at South Dakota University. The subjects for this study were all the students who participated in the two courses. The author used teachers in K-12 who attended both a Basic Technology for Teaching and Learning Academy, and the Advanced Technology for Teaching and Learning Academy at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota. A possible issue related to sampling may be that the author used teachers who attended a specific professional development experience. What if the courses did not benefit the students? A survey was mailed to the 300 South Dakota teachers who attended the classes. Of the 300 teachers who took the classes, 174 returned the survey. This was a 58% response rate. As we discussed in class 50% is a good response. The findings were based on the participants use and integration of technology in the classroom for teaching and learning, and the differences in perceptions based on the demographic and personal characteristics. Of the thirteen page article, seven pages were devoted to the findings. Demographic data collected were gender, age, teaching experience, grade level teaching, content area, and educational level. Research question one, ââ¬Å"how do teachers currently use and integrate technology for teaching and learning in the classroomâ⬠was divided into three phases. Phase one devoted to professional productivity, phase two devoted to delivering instruction using technology, and phase three devoted to teachers integrating technology into student learning. The results were displayed APA style in a chart that displayed Mean and Standard Deviation. For this question, the findings report that teachers do not integrate technology well for teaching and learning, but do for professional productivity and facilitation of delivery of instruction. The second research question compared technology integration to each characteristic factor. For the first factor of male vs. female, a t-test was used to compare. There was no significant difference in gender and the use or integration of technology. Each factor was compared using a one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance). ANOVA is used when you have factors and a dependent variable. For each of the characteristics or factors a means was displayed for each of the differences of perception regarding, age, years teaching experience, grade level taught, content area, and educational level. From the findings of this analysis, only grade level taught had a significant difference in technology integration and uses. Teachers of Grades 9-12 use and integrate technology into learning more than teachers in lower grades. The study was accurate in their analysis and their findings. The study does not describe the content of the courses the teachers attended at the South Dakota University, or method of delivery. It only supplies the title of the course. References Gorder, L. Essay on External and Internal Conflict in The Ministerââ¬â¢s...
External and Internal Conflict in ââ¬Å"The Ministerââ¬â¢s Black Veilâ⬠Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"The Ministerââ¬â¢s Black Veilâ⬠manifests a duality of conflict ââ¬â both an external conflict and an internal conflict. It is the purpose of this essay to explore both types of conflict as manifested in the story. In the opinion of this reader, the central conflicts ââ¬â the relation between the protagonist and antagonist (Abrams 225) - in the tale are an internal one, a spiritual-moral conflict within the minister, the Reverend Mr. Hooper, and an external one with the world at large represented by the congregation. Wilson Sullivan in ââ¬Å"Nathaniel Hawthorneâ⬠tells where the author got the idea of a conflict between good andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦. . . . . . more than one woman of delicate nerves was forced to leave the meeting-house. At this point begins the external conflict of the drama ââ¬â between the minister and the people of his congregation, which will last until his death. Except for the sable veil, Reverend Hooper is quite a compatible and sociable personality: Mr. Hooper had the reputation of a good preacher, but not an energetic one: he strove to win his people heavenward by mild, persuasive influences, rather than to drive them thither by the thunders of the Word. The sermon which he now delivered was marked by the same characteristics of style and manner as the general series of his pulpit oratory. However, on this first day of wearing his black veil there is some peculiar difference in Hooperââ¬â¢s sermon: But there was something, either in the sentiment of the discourse itself, or in the imagination of the auditors, which made it greatly the most powerful effort that they had ever heard from their pastors lips. It was tinged, rather more darkly than usual, with the gentle gloom of Mr. Hoopers temperament. The subject had reference to secret sin. . . . The psychological impact of the veil is that each parishioner feels that ââ¬Å"the preacher had crept upon them, behind his awful veil, and discovered their hoarded iniquity of deed or thoughtâ⬠; and ââ¬Å"withShow MoreRelated The Ministerââ¬â¢s Black Veilââ¬â External, Internal Conflict Essay2734 Words à |à 11 Pagesââ¬Å"The Ministerââ¬â¢s Black Veilâ⬠ââ¬â External, Internal Conflictà à à à à à à à à à à à à Based on the evaluations of literary critics, Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s short story, ââ¬Å"The Ministerââ¬â¢s Black Veil,â⬠contains both an external and an internal conflict, about equally treated in the tale. Does Multiple Personality Disorder Really Exist - 2104 Words
PS101 Position Paper: Does MPD Really Exist? Imagine youre having a conversation with a friend who is a slender, attractive young woman. Its a casual chat about nothing in particular between friends. You take out a pack of cigarettes and immediately sense a change, your friends body twitches slightly and her mannerism changes. Her shoulders square, she puts her feet flat on the floor and assumes an instinctively masculine pose. Placing her hands on her knees, she leans toward you, and says in a voice that has dropped two octaves, Excuse me, maam. I really favor those cigarettes you have. Mind if I have one? Id be most beholden to you. Your friend is gone and a strange man has popped in, literally. Again, you and your friendâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another common explanation for MPD is that it is mistakenly diagnosed as Schizophrenia due to a few common symptoms. Although both disorders share auditory hallucinations, Schizophrenics believe the noises are outside of their head and may hear multiple voices or noises a t the same time. MPD patients portray only one personality at a time and while each personality may be aware and have feelings about the others they do not conflict or converse with each other. In my opinion, I believe that Multiple Personality Disorder does not exist. The fact that it increased in popularity after being brought into the publics eye via media is very suspicious. In North America, the number of diagnoses exploded from only 2 reported cases per decade from 1930 to 1960, to more than 20,000 in the 1980s (McHugh). I believe that the idea of MPD goes along with Sigmund Freuds theory of repression. Repression was thought to be a defense mechanism that concealed terrible experiences and painful memories from consciousness. The theory of repression was later discredited after studies proved that high stress events enhance the memory making negative, traumatic events remembered well. Applied Research for Organizational Leader
Question: Evaluate organizational management theories and methodologies that impact organizational growth. Answer: Introduction: According to Ali (2015), the standards of learning and teaching need to improve incessantly if the educational institutions want to ensure that the students and the young people achieve success in the future. Therefore the role of the school leaders is vital to improving the outcomes of the school that can motivate and influence the working environment of the institution. In this context being the Principal of the ABC school, I would conduct a feedback session of the staffs of the school including the teachers, clerks, and other administrative staffs in order to collect input on the developing leadership in the institution (Harris et al., 2013). Questions and inputs: Question 1 How does a school Principal influence the potency among the employee workforce of a school? Question 2 Describe your vision for the improvement of this organization. Question 3 State about the contributions made by you in order to make your visions relating to the school true. Question 4 What was the impact of your leadership activity on facilitating change in the school? Give an example of an example. Question 5 Do you aspire to be the head of any department? If yes, in which department and how far have you completed your journey to achieve the goal? Question 6 Explain the input that you have given in the development, communication and strategic planning of your present schools vision. Question 7 How do you exemplify your present institutions vision for excellence in your day-to-day practice? Question 8 Demonstrate the relation that you have established with other employees of the institution. Question 9 As a leader of the students what are the attributes that you think you possess in order to manage the student community? Question 10 What are the personal learning objectives from the previous year and how you are going to address those issues? (Ali, 2015). Significance of the questions: The main reason for designing the first question was to know whether as a leader of the teacher and other staffs of the school, the potent possessed as a Principal is enough or not in influencing and motivating them to follow my shadows. The outcome of the question would help to understand whether compliance is noticeable as a Principal or not. According to Coelli Green (2012), a systemic leader needs to have the trait of compliance in order to execute specific rules to achieve sustainability. The second question was ked in order to test the vision and thought of the employees of the school. The answers would reflect their thought process and their desire to upgrade the status of the school in terms of education service and quality achieved. As stated by Auerbach (2012), every leader has a distinct outlook towards his or her career and this ultimately positively affects the growth of the organization. The outcome of the questions would help to understand the prospect of the school ( John et al., 20140. The third question would help to understand the extent of contribution given as a leader in order to fulfill the vision and bring about desirable changes in the school atmosphere. As discussed by Calik et al., (2012), accountability is a key component in developing oneself as a leader. Thus, this question would reflect the extent of accountability possessed by the staffs in the completion of the pre-set objectives. If an individual realizes his or her responsibilities and liabilities towards his organization then, he or she is a leader by definition. The fourth question would help to understand the situations where the staff has used this quality in order to produce positive affect in changing the shape of the school (Leithwood Hallinger, 2012). One of the key aspects possessed by the successful leader is ambition. According to Goleman Boyatzis McKee (2013), Ambition is a quality that helps an individual to develop the standards and qualities of his or her organization. As discussed by Ali (2015), it is very important for a leader to have an ambition so that it can help them to grow as a leader as well as raise the set up of the organization. In this context, the fifth question would help to identify the areas in which the employees want to excel and whether their ambition is ethical and valuable or not. The sixth question would help to realize whether the employee has focus and accountability towards his or her work. The knowledge of 5hew strategic planning made by the staff would help in identification of his or her potential and vision towards the changing of the institutional function and structure (Leithwood, 2016). The importance of the seventh question is to check the level of compliance possessed by the staff and also it would help in recognizing their level of understanding about the standards of the school and their input to maintain the rules and regulations. As stated by Goethals et al. (2014), a successful leader is one who abides by such rules to bring success in the organization. For example, the tolerance and patience are the qualities of an effective teacher. This quality helps to understand the issues of a student and give a solution to such issues. Such actions ultimately help the students to excel in life and fulfill the mission of the school of creating excellence (Leithwood, 2016). The eighth question was framed in order to understand whether the employee is cooperative in nature or not. In order to run an educational institution, it is very important to create a healthy environment where a child can gather knowledge peacefully. As stated by Goethals et al. (2014), a systemic leader shows gratitude towards others. This quality reduces negative emotions such as greed, anger, bitterness, etc. The ninth question symbolizes the traits that are required in order to be a successful leader among the student community. According to Harris et al. (2013), a successful leader needs to possess compliance, ambition, vision, patience, tolerance, etc. The last question was made to recognize the understanding level of the staff. It is very important for a leader to learn few things out of every issue. Such a question can help in understanding their learning (Leithwood, 2016). Conclusion: This assignment needed to develop ten practical questions based on the input of the staffs in regards to the development of leadership in the school. The feedback obtained from the staff would help in understanding whether the employees have developed the leadership quality in them in order to create a leadership environment that could bring about changes in the school development. An effective leader has certain traits that help in recognizing them among the crowd which includes ambition, vision, compliance, patience, humility, accountability, gratitude, tolerance, courage and humor. In order to recognize whether these qualities are possessed by the employees of the school or not, as a Principal of the ABC school, these questions were designed. The feedback would ultimately help in recognizing the strengths and weakness of the staffs. Their inputs on the leadership would help to recognize my potential and strengths as a Principal and components that could be used in the future to de velop a leadership environment in the school. Moreover, the feedbacks would also help to identify and strategize implementation that can promote such an environment in the school premises. References: Ali, Q. (2015). Many People Suffer From Unattractive Fat Build Up In Certain Areas Ess
Many people suffer from unattractive fat build up in certain areas of their bodies. Women tend to accumulate fat around the hips, thighs, abdomen, and buttocks. Men have problems with ?love handles? and their abdomen. Either might have problems with their neck, chin, legs, arms, or breasts. These stubborn deposits remain even after diet and exercise. At best, many people would have to become excessively thin in other areas prior to slimming these problem spots. But now there is away to help people like this, by decreasing their size to one that fits them more appropriately, but only through a surgery called liposuction. Liposuction is also referred to as suction assisted lipectomy, lipo-sculpture, or lipoplasty; but they basically are the same. Liposuction removes fat deposits which are unresponsive to diet and exercise. Surgeons can vacuum fat from beneath the surface of the skin, using an instrument called a cannula. This surgery is used to decrease fullness in any area of the body. It is an excellent method of spot reduction and unwanted bulges, but it is not very effective for losing weight. First started in the early 1980s, liposuctions present significant advantages over other techniques of body contouring. Huge scars are avoided by laboring through small incisions, (less than a half inch), that are placed in the most unnoticeable areas, such as natural folds of skin. Liposuction scars are very small and they are strategically placed in obscure places. Then a slender, smooth, round, hollowed out surgical suction rod, also known as a cannula, is injected and is connected to a vacuum like object with a suction tube. This vacuum sucks the fat right out of the body, leaving muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and skin in place. This process allows the surgeon to recreate the body's shape, and sculpt a new improved contour. For women, the most common areas treated are the thighs and stomach. Men tend to have their ?love handles? and flank area treated. Other areas that are treated as well are the hips, buttocks, knees, ankles, double chins, and facial accumulations of fat. Liposuction has become one of the most common cosmetic techniques all over the world during the past fifteen years, due mainly to its safety and effectiveness. Athletic individuals who are of normal body weight and are already using an exercise program make the best candidates for liposuction, because their deposits of fat are usually in one place due to their physical fitness, but others can also benefit from this surgery. Usually people with localized areas of bulging fat receive the most dramatic results, because these localized areas of adipose are easily removed since the fat is all in one place. Patients who are slightly overweight will also benefit, but patients should not be obese. Age is not a important factor, but good skin elasticity in patients will help the skin shrink to its improved contour. The most important quality for patients, is for them to have realistic expectations of what can be accomplished. Patients should not have heart or lung problems, but should be in generally good health. This procedure is not an alternative to weight loss, and there is a limit to how much fat can safely be removed at one time. The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons recognize liposuction as a safe and effective technique of removing sectioned areas of excessive fat. Nonetheless, in rare occasions, this surgery may cause severe trauma, especially when many or very extensive areas are suctioned at one time. Like any other surgery, complications such as bloodclots, infection, skin loss, and in the most extremes cases even death can occur. However, a well trained and qualified surgeons perform the surgery, these instances become quite rare. Although a surgeon maybe very skilled, conflicts can occur; such may include bagginess or rippling of the skin on the area treated. Also pigment alterations (brown spots), can become common and become permanent if disclosed to the sun. Bagginess of the skin may become permanent if the skin fails to adjust to its skin surface. However, problems like these are uncommon due to the new techniques such as: the use of smaller cannulas and the combination of deep suctioning with superficial suctioning. If you are thinking about liposuction, choose a surgeon carefully to insure that you receive the best cosmetic and surgical results possible. There are a lot of official-sounding organizations and certifications that don't mean anything in ways of qualification.
